Up until now, biblical scholarship has been mainly concerned with the ways in which history has influenced the telling of the biblical story. Only recently has attention been focused on how the formal requirements of storytelling, the poetics of story, have shaped the Gospels and Acts. This book examines the surface structures of narrative texts to discover how the reader constructs plot, character, and perspective from signals embedded in the discourse.
